AMMONIA STRIPPER

An Ammonia Stripper is an industrial wastewater treatment system designed to remove dissolved ammonia from wastewater, process effluent, and industrial streams. It is widely used in chemical, pharmaceutical, fertilizer, API manufacturing, and other industries where ammonia removal is essential for pollution control and regulatory compliance.
Working Principle
An ammonia stripper operates on the principle of mass transfer, in which dissolved ammonia is transferred from the liquid phase to the gas phase. Typically, wastewater is adjusted to an alkaline pH to convert ammonium ions into free ammonia. The wastewater is then brought into contact with air or steam inside a stripping column, where ammonia transfers from the liquid to the gas stream.
The column generally contains PP Pall Rings , which provide a large surface area for efficient gas-liquid contact. The ammonia-rich exhaust gas can subsequently be treated using an acid scrubber, where ammonia reacts with sulphuric acid to form ammonium sulphate solution.
Types of Ammonia Strippers
- Open-Type Ammonia Stripper: Uses air to remove ammonia from wastewater, with the exhaust gas collected and treated through a suitable scrubbing system.
- Closed-Type Ammonia Stripper: Operates in an enclosed system to control ammonia emissions and direct the ammonia-rich gas to a recovery or treatment unit.
- Steam Stripper: Uses steam to transfer ammonia from wastewater into the vapour phase, particularly where higher removal efficiency or process recovery is required.
Key Features
- Efficient Ammonia Removal: Designed to reduce ammonia concentration in industrial wastewater.
- Corrosion-Resistant Construction: Available in PP, FRP, PP-FRP, or other suitable materials depending on operating conditions.
- High Mass-Transfer Efficiency: Packed column design improves contact between wastewater and stripping air or steam.
- Customised Design: Capacity, column dimensions, packing media, and operating parameters can be selected according to wastewater characteristics.
- Emission Control: Can be integrated with an ammonia scrubber for safe treatment of ammonia-containing exhaust gas.
Applications
Ammonia strippers are used in pharmaceutical and API plants, chemical industries, fertilizer manufacturing, industrial ETPs, and other wastewater treatment facilities.
